why a
gift shop?
a note
by james cauty
Artists
get sick of galleries.... we walk in .... spend ten minutes looking at the work
it took someone a year to put together then head straight for the cafe, gift
shop or just outside for a fag......not that we're pissed off that we
don't have an exhibition in a big swanky turbine hall.... or just totally
depressed because we think our work is so crap nobody wants to exhibit it but
in the end , for us, the gift shop becomes the place we can explore our
branding ideas... Cash for trash....it represents the futility and the glory of
it all. art...death...shopping...
The
theme of our shop is government induced terror. Most things in the shop
relate to the government leaflet we got through the post and the idea you are
going to need to stock up on certain items before you retire to your terror
attack bunker or hide under the kitchen table this Xmas. So we've made some
things the government recommends and then some we think are bunker
essentials.
We want
to make some money cos we're skint but feel guilty about charging too much
so i guess we'll end up breaking even as usual. On the positive side
we do have the retail advantage of being the only post terrorist modernist gift
shop open on xmas day as far as we know. Whatever happens we feel sure that our
gift ideas will make a real difference to many people this
christmas.
the
blacksmoke organization
blacksmoke is an imagined art collective
we
produce works of art
our
leader is james cauty
we
don't exhibit much
we
don't release many records
we
sometimes dj at parties for cash
but
usually stay in and work
we do
from time to time produce a huge amount of stuff
some of
this stuff can be purchased at the aquarium
some of
it's not finished yet
we work
in an old wheelchair factory on the south coast
on 1st
dec 2004 we'll launch web site modeled on a container yard with a 60ft high
stack of advent calender containers...in the run up to xmas recent work
will be shown on this site and at the aquarium, the shop will be linked to the
site and on xmas day a limited edition 7 inch single 'i'm dreaming of a
black xmas' will be released...on 1st jan 2005 blacksmoke will open a shop
at
www.blacksmoke.org
